Frequently Asked Questions

Can I access wrap-around care?

Yes! We have a breakfast and tea club each day. For more information view our childcare provision page.

What is the school uniform?

Pupils at West Rainton Primary School are required to wear

Girls: Emerald Green Round Neck Jumpers or Cardigans available from the school office, white shirts/polo shirts and black or grey skirts or trousers. In the summer girls are allowed to wear gingham dresses in green or yellow.

Boys: Emerald Green V-neck or Round Neck Jumpers available from the school office, white shirts/polo shirts and black or grey trousers. In the summer boys can wear school shorts in grey or black.

Footwear: All children are required to wear sensible black school shoes with no big logos or additional colours. Boots, heels and trainers are not suitable for school. In winter weather children can come to school in wellies as long as they bring indoor shoes for during lessons.

PE: All children are allocated a House on admission to our school and our office manager will offer you the correct colour house top for PE. Children also need plain black shorts and a pair of trainers or gym shoes. Please note that PE kit is to stay in school for the whole week and trainers need to be solely for school use, not ones that are required to go home each night.

Hairstyles: Children must not come into school with extreme hairstyles- mohicans/mohawks, colours or lines/patterns shaved in. We also ask that all hair of shoulder length is tied up neatly.

Jewellery: Children are permitted to wear a watch for school as this encourages their ability to tell the time. No other jewellery is permitted in school for safety reasons. Please do not get ears pierced at any time other than the 6-week holiday as all PE and outdoor play has to be stopped for children wearing earrings.

What do I do if my child is going to be absent?

At West Rainton Primary School high attendance is of great importance to us. We expect all children to attend at the national attendance rate of 95% or higher. To achieve this children must not be off more than 9 days in a school year.

If your child is ill and unable to attend school you must inform the school office by telephone or in person by 9.15am. If you fail to do so our Office Manager will contact you to see why your child is absent. This is for safety reasons as you may be unaware that your child has not arrived at school. County guidelines for absence due to sickness or stomach upsets is to remain off for 48hrs after symptoms stop. If you need guidance for other illnesses please ask at our school office.

Please be aware children who return to school after an illness must be fit to take part in all aspects of school life including outdoor play. Respiratory complaints and asthma are, of course, exceptions.

As part of our policy on achieving high attendance the Headteacher will not authorise any absences for holidays or family events.
