A message from our Head Teacher
Hello, and welcome to West Rainton Primary School.
It is both a privilege and a pleasure to show you what our school has to offer.
Our school is a fun and happy place to work, play, learn and grow. We care for each other like a big, extended family, and we are proud of our school values, achievements and every individual within it. We make every school-day count.
Our school is situated in the beautiful, rural village of West Rainton on the outskirts of Durham. It opened in 1927, during a proud period of coalmining heritage, and has been serving the community of West Rainton and Leamside ever since. We pride ourselves on being a safe, inclusive school community where lifelong learning is fostered through high quality educational experiences, creativity and enjoyment.
Children of all ages have full access to a rich, inclusive and ambitious curriculum that allows everyone to shine, and ensures the children leave us with a strong sense of self-awareness, proud of who they are and confident to contribute positively to 21st century life. As well as this, we have an extensive extra-curricular offer and a wonderful ‘hidden’ curriculum, rich with opportunities in the arts, sports, sciences, technology and careers.
If you would like to know more about our fantastic school, or would really enjoy a look around, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Mrs Alison McDonough
Headteacher

We believe that successful learning depends on:
- How we feel about what we are doing (motivation, self-confidence)
- The opportunities we have (quality of teaching and learning experiences provided)
- Having the right attitude to learning (skills to be able to learn and access to knowledge)
- Having supportive people around us (family, teachers and external agencies who can help)
We aim to:
- Create a safe, welcoming calm environment in which we can all learn.
- Meet the needs of all individuals and enable them to achieve their full potential.
- Challenge everyone to be the best they can be by overcoming barriers to learning.
- Provide a variety of creative and exciting learning opportunities.
- Encourage independence, motivation and an eagerness to learn.
- Involve everyone in making a positive contribution to the community we work in and beyond.
- Ensure everyone has a voice and is heard.
- Inspire our school community to become caring, respectful and inclusive global citizens in our diverse world.
The governing body of the school commit their time voluntarily to offer both support and challenge to the headteacher in the effective running of the school and the continuous drive to always aim higher.
- As a governing body we are proud to be an integral part of shaping the lives and futures of the pupils of West Rainton Primary School.
