Come and join in with your child at our school celebration for the Queen’s 90th birthday . We will be having a picnic outside with a traditional theme. Each class has made a tasty treat to enjoy. The date for our picnic is Friday 10th June and will be at 1pm.
Robinwood May 2016
The pupils of Year 5 and 6 (and Mrs McDonough, Mrs Firth, Mr McDonough and Miss McCaffery!) are all very excited about Robinwood! Less than a week to go…
Keep an eye out for the photographs to follow…
Visit to Gurudwara in Sunderland!
Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a fabulous visit to the the Guru Gobind Singh Gurudwara in Sunderland in early November. They found out about how Sikh people worship, and all about their customs and community. They were extremely welcoming, in both the Gurudwara and the langar hall afterwards.
Happy Harvest Festival
It was great to celebrate with our community in our traditional harvest festival this autumn. The children of Reception, along with their Year 6 special friends, showed their knowledge of crop planting, growing and harvesting to a great audience of family members. We also delivered harvest hampers to our neighbours and sang for the residents of Springfield Lodge. It was lovely to remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have the food we need and to share it with others. Well done Reception and Year 6!
Lumiere 2015
Pupils at West Rainton Primary school will be helping an artist to create one of the installations at this year’s Durham Lumiere festival. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to see our work on show inside Durham Cathedral at an event that attracts thousands of visitors. Please collect as many clear 2 litre pop bottles with lids as you can and send them into school to help us with this project.
West Rainton and Leamside Village Show 2015
We loved participating once again in the annual village show. This year saw the first entries by nursery with their beautiful painted butterflies.
Pupils in school contributed artwork and writing to the show including a diary by Mr or Mrs Andrews, a collage of a plate of food, an invitation to an international picnic and a sports’ day newspaper report.
Visitors to this year’s show were astounded at the quality of the children’s work, particularly the writing which was of such a high standard both in terms of presentation and content.
Pupils get to be sports reporters for the day
Fifteen pupils from Year 5 got the unique opportunity to try working as sports reporters at the Stadium of Light. Thanks to the Foundation of Light and Barclays Premier League World, the pupils had a guided tour of the stadium by Kevin Ball before interviewing him about his career in the media suite facilities. After lunch it was time to talk to the current captain, John O’Shea, and pupils thoroughly enjoyed meeting him! I think Mrs McDonough was a bit excited for this trip too!
The General Election 2015!
One of our topics for discussion in May was the General Election. As part of our work on British Values and SMSC, it is vital that our young people understand what democracy is all about! After all, they are the voters of the future, and at West Rainton Primary School we are proud of our well-informed pupils. From Reception to Year 6, every pupil voted in our ‘Education Election’ making the difficult decision of choosing the best manifesto!
Pupil and Parent Feedback Spring 2015
We were delighted by the response given to our pupil and parent surveys carried out in the spring of 2015. 57 of 88 families gave parent/carer feedback. In addition to this, 123 of our pupils gave very valuable views for us to consider.

Toby Carvery for all!
Every class in our school was thrilled to visit the Toby Carvery at Washington last academic year. Over a few weeks, each class in turn went to find out all about the way in which our food is grown and prepared. Everyone found out the names of new vegetables and fruits, which they can now try out at home.
After the hard work was complete, each class (and the adults!) were treated to a tasty carvey meal, courtesy of the Toby Carvery. Great fun was had by all and we are very grateful to the Toby Carvery for their kindness and generosity.
