We are taking school swimming seriously
This year West Rainton Primary School signed up to the ASA’s school swimming charter and pledged to take school swimming seriously. Using sport premium funding school have made a commitment to recording and rewarding progress in swimming. Year 3 are the first pupils to gain badges and certificates for their efforts so far. Mrs McDonough has loved training to be a swimming TA in order to ensure pupils get more quality attention at the pool.
Netball league runners up
Huge congratulations go to our High Five Netball team and their coach, Mrs Firth, on achieving second position in their very first time in the league in over a decade. Your speed and skills really shone through and as very new participants to the game you can expect even better things to come.
You certainly looked the part in your team kit!

High Five for our new netball kit!
The sporting year has got off to a great start with West Rainton Primary School participating in the Durham Primary School’s High 5 Netball league for the very first time. Coach Firth has been getting the squad up to speed with the rules and techniques of High 5, and this hard work paid off with a 3-0 win in their very first match against St Thomas More. A narrow 1-0 defeat to Sherburn Village Primary has not set the squad back from aiming for netball glory. A 3-0 Win against Belmont was a welcome addition to the team’s glory in the second week of the league.
Congratulations on your brilliant start and good luck for the remainder of the tournament.
Sport Premium funding ensured our team looked the part too with brand new team jackets and netball kits…
Football season gets off to a good start!
Well done to our Y5-6 football team in their opening performances of the season. They have played seven matches so far and gained nine points scoring some great goals. At the other end our goalkeepers have made terrific saves to keep us in matches. The most important thing of all is a high level of work rate and, wearing our brand new team kits, West Rainton Primary FC have shown just that!
A visit from the future champs!
We were so lucky to receive a very special visit from a team of future champions in sport all the way from South Africa. The boys, all teenagers, and their coaches spent the whole afternoon working with the children in classes, playing music for Reception outside and challenging the school to a huge football match. We learnt a lot about life in Johannesburg and the similarities and differences in our cultures.
Congratulations to the Durham School’s Girls Javelin Record Holder
Our warmest congratulations go to Grace Wilkinson in Year 6 for beating all of the competition at the Durham Primary School’s athletics tournament in June 2014. Grace became the girl’s javelin champion for the second year running extending the record already held by her. We are extremely proud of this incredible achievement!
West Rainton is a hub of boxing talent!
Our weekly lunchtime boxing club is one of our most popular extra-curricular activities; no wonder when we are surrounded by so many boxing talents! Ex pupil Martin Ward came in to boxing club to show us his English Bantamweight championship belt and to check out the new stars that we are creating!
We were also very pleased to welcome back ex pupil, Mark Dickinson to show us the Schoolboy European Bronze medal that he won recently in Russia.
Congratulations also to Jon-Lewis Dickinson, uncle to Mark and current pupils Kizzy and Samson, on becoming British champion at Cruiserweight. We are very proud to be linked with all of you and thank you all so much for your continued support of our school.
My Holiday to Venice
I had a fabulous time over the summer when I visited the magical city of Venice in Italy. Venice is built on a collection of islands and is completely surrounded with water. This means that you will not see any cars, buses or lorries; instead the people travel around by boat or gondola. Venice is famous for St Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace and some very famous bridges. I hope you like my photographs.
