Our pupils have recently been learning about the importance of remembrance and reflection as we took part in the annual poppy appeal by the Royal British Legion. Pupils in KS2 performed a remembrance assembly for the community before heading to the church war memorial to lay a wreath on behalf of the school. Pupils in Y2 joined the juniors to entertain the residents of Springfield Lodge with some wartime tunes.
Romeo and Juliet
Pupils in Year 5 took part in the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival 2017 performing a 30 minute version of Romeo and Juliet at the Gala Theatre, Durham. The entire cast were incredible and received a rapturous round of applause for their talented display. Hours of studying the text and how to convey the emotions of the tragic love story really paid off on the night. Well done Year 5; you were an amazing team.
Harvest Festival
Autumn term is a perfect time for us to reflect on how fortunate we are to have the food we need and to offer our thanks to everyone involved in bringing food from the farm to our dinner tables. Reception, along with their Year 6 special friends put together a lovely assembly for parents and family members. We have been collecting food items for a while now, and we think we’ve achieved the most generous amount ever because of your kind donations. We created and distributed fruit and vegetable hampers for our neighbours in West Rainton which were very gratefully received. This year, we have also been supporting Durham Christian Partnership who collected nine boxes of groceries for their food bank charity. Thank you so much for supporting our harvest appeal so generously.
Birds of prey visit school
The whole school were excited to welcome the birds of prey into assembly recently. The visit, to enrich the literacy teaching in Year 2 about ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’, was such an informative and enjoyable experience for us all. We met, and learned all about, a harris hawk, a falcon and a barn owl called Plop who looked just like the subject of the book. Nursery read ‘Owl Babies’ in their forest school session before coming into assembly to see the birds in action.
Pride in Our Village Day
in October 2017, the pupils of West Rainton did their bit to contribute to the community’s ‘Pride in Our Village Day’ by thinking about our social responsibility for where we live. We had a special assembly led by the civic pride team at Durham County Council to discuss litter. Tidy Ted came along too and he was delighted with the responses made by our children. He knows he does not need to worry about any of us causing any litter issues.
Eco-Council also took on an added responsibility and joined the team at St Mary’s Church to plant hundreds of bulbs ready for springtime. Crocuses and mini daffodils will make a colourful display next year and we can’t wait to return to see our work burst into bloom.
Shakespeare rehearsals step up
Pupils in Year 5 are now just four weeks away from their performance of Romeo and Juliet at Durham’s Gala Theatre. This week saw preparations step up with painting of masquerade masks for the ball scene and the arrival of our official festival t-shirts. We really look the part now!
Cycling safety day
Pupils from Reception to Y6 enjoyed a full day of cycling safety experiences with the Durham school sports’ partnership. In assembly, the children discussed how to stay safe when enjoying their cycling and learnt the code of 2V1 to remember when securing their helmets. They then carried out an experiment with Mr ‘Melon Head’ to see the different results when falling with or without a helmet.
Over the day, reception and Year 1 took part in balance bike riding, Year 2 did a cycling safety session, Y4/5 made helmets for eggs and Y6 took part in a fast-paced cycling time-trial.
School Achieves AfPE Quality Mark
2017 has been an award winning year for our school as September saw the addition of AfPE Quality Mark to our growing list of accolades. The whole school community maintains a high level of passion for all subject areas led by skilled and dedicated staff members and it is especially lovely when this is recognised by external bodies. The AfPE assessor was incredibly impressed with the pupils’ passion for PE and sport and the many innovative ways our PE lead, Mr McDonough, has encouraged and fostered this.
Congratulations to all on this brilliant award; the academic year is off to a winning start!
Prizes galore in this year’s village show
We were delighted to welcome Mrs Whitehouse to our assembly on the occasion of presenting this year’s prizes for the annual village show. The show, which took place in September 2017, included sections of activities linked to our 90th birthday. The children were very pleased for the winners in school and can’t wait to participate in the event again next year.
New brass students
Pupils in Year 5 have become our second crop of brass band students taking part in weekly lessons with teacher, Mr Wilkinson. The band have begun to get to know their instruments and the basics of producing a sound, reading notation and playing as a group.
