A new school year and a new footie season is underway. Our Y5/6 team will play over the next few weeks in Durham SSP’s League 1 at Meadowfield. We wish you lots of luck and hope you have fun representing our school on the pitch.
West Rainton Village Show
Every September, we take part in West Rainton and Leamside’s annual village show. Every pupil from nursery to year 6 entered pieces of work (most pupils with two entries) totalling over 300 pieces. The work looked outstanding on display and the entire community were very proud to see the high standard of work of its village school.
We also entered the group category, making a character that would feature in a circus. Phineas, the lion, came second in his class!
Derwent Hill 2019
2019 was my first trip to Derwent Hill Outdoor Adventure centre in Keswick, Cumbria. I had a brilliant weekend with year 5 and 6 canoeing on Derwentwater, climbing Catbells, ghyll scrambling at Stoneycroft and braving the big swing.
We can’t wait for next year’s adventure now!
Take One Picture 2019
After a year of preparation and hard work, the moment finally arrived to see our artwork exhibited in The National Gallery, London. Our Y6’s produced printed flyers to advertise the travelling scientist featured in Joseph Wright of Derby’s painting ‘An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump.’
It was a very proud moment seeing the work so professionally displayed alongside works of Van Gogh and Monet! We told everyone we saw that this was OUR work!
Harry Potter Studios 2019
Twenty lucky children visited Harry Potter Studios In Leavesden, Watford, in June 2019. They had a fabulous time seeing the real props, sets, costumes and special effects from the blockbusting Harry Potter movie series. We all came out with a few treats from the gift shop and memories to last a lifetime!
National Care Home Open Day
We were thrilled to be invited to share in Springfield Lodge’s Open Day as part of a national day of welcoming communities into care homes.
The morning comprised of a sing-off in which we sang two modern songs and listened to two songs from the residents. The judge had a tricky decision to make, but decided our rendition of ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ was the winning song! We were rewarded with a fish and chip lunch in the garden and, as an extra treat, an ice cream each. What better way to celebrate the run-up to summer!
We love working together with our local community. The residents and children get on so well together.
Cycle safety
Pupils in Key Stage Two were recently offered the chance to access a cycling safety course. They learnt some basic maintenance of the bike, as well as the importance of wearing a helmet. They also practised skills such as braking safely and how to indicate.
Learning traditional games
There’s a saying that goes ‘you’re never too old to learn’. Well, we also believe you’re never too old to teach, and that is certainly what happened when pupils from Y5 and 6 took on the residents of Springfield Lodge in a domino tournament. The game, organised in support of dementia friendly activities, ended up being a lesson to our pupils in how to play (and lose) gracefully! It was lovely to see the two generations coming together in a shared enjoyment of a simple game, and, despite the result, the children would love to come and play again.
Durham Primary Dance Festival
Performing our dance routines on the stage of the Gala Theatre in Durham city is one of our favourite events of the year. This time, we took our Y6 class to reprise their performance of ‘The Greatest’ by Sia. That was followed by a ‘Mary Poppins Medley’ performed by a KS2 dance team who scooped the award for ‘most energetic routine’ on the day. Well done to all of our dancing stars.
A trip to The Beacon of Light
It’s not often we get the chance to take the whole school out together on a trip but when the opportunity arose to visit the newly opened Beacon of Light at Sunderland, we just couldn’t wait to see inside. Our pupils enjoyed an afternoon of sport in the amazing facilities including the rooftop barn featuring state-of-the-art indoor pitches. Thank you to our friends at the Foundation of Light for inviting us to be part of the EFL’s day of action.
