The launch of the new colliery banner

Our school had the privilege to be the leaders in a community project to restore and revive a pivotal part of West Rainton and Leamside’s heritage with the creation of a brand new colliery banner.

Our village only exists as it is now because of coal, and we are passionate about our children understanding this important part of their history. Miners epitomised a strong work ethic, camaraderie and fairness; values which we still promote in school today.

Our banner launch, on Sunday September 12th, was the first event for our community to celebrate together since spring of 2020. We had a large group of pupils and parents parading through the village, following Bearpark and Esh Colliery Brass Band, to a dedication service at St Mary’s.

We now have the banner hanging proudly in our entranceway in school.
